Suicide car bomb killed 20 people in Mogadishu

At least twenty people including policemen were killed and dozens others wounded Monday in a suicide car bomb attack on a police post in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, reports say.

Witnesses told Garowe Online that an explosive-laden Toyota van exploded inside Hamar jajab district police post in Mogadishu’s southern district of Hamar Jajab, near the seaport.

“It was horrible incident, More than 10 police officers, mostly security guards and dozen civilians have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack,” said the eyewitness.

However, Al-Shabaab officials have claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on government troops.

“We successfully achieved our mission that was planned by our soldiers, we killed many Somali soldier (our enemies),” Sheikh Mohammud Ali Raghe aka Sheikh Ali Dhere, a spokesman for al-Shabaab, said in a press conference.

In additional, Somali police spokesman Abdullahi Hassan Barise confirmed that a women was among the suicide bombers.

“We lost seven soldiers, but Al-shabaab used cruel and evil attacks when our troops defeat them in the Mogadishu's clashes,” he said.

Medic official, Dr. Mahamed Yusuf, put the number of the dead at slightly over 7, saying those injured, mainly TFG soldiers were rushed to Mogadishu’s Medina hospital with some of them in critical conditions.

Continuous fighting between insurgents linked to Al-Qaeda and pro-government security forces backed by AU/AMISOM has killed thousands of Somalis and displaced hundreds of thousands more, mostly from the capital Mogadishu.

The seaside city has been the scene of decades-long incessant civil strife that erupted after the ouster of former President Mohammed Siad Bare.
