LONDON, UK Jan 6, 2012 (Garowe Online) - The UK’s
House of Commons released a Tenth Report on piracy off the coast of Somalia today which discussed Britain's role
in fighting piracy, Radio Garowe reports.
The report which discussed the economic
impact of piracy off the coast of Somalia suggested that threat is
not primarily against British ships but has effects on the economy
worldwide.
The report also discussed UK’s interest in
Somalia and the role it should be playing, the UK government regards Somalia as
key priority and UK Prime Minister David Cameron stated that Somalia “directly
threatens British interests.”
It goes on to discuss the security
problems that Somalia faces
and what role the UK
could play that UN agencies might have failed.
The report also criticized the UN Security Council's resolutions: “
Despite
nine UN Security Council resolutions and three multinational naval operations,
the counter-piracy policy has had limited impact,” suggesting that their have
been a "gap between the Government's rhetoric and its action."
This report is crucial
because the international community is engaging in the fight against Piracy
with an upcoming meeting being held in Nairobi
on Piracy and its effects on the global community.
