A UN official on Friday shared his appreciation for Turkey's flood of humanitarian assistance to Somalia, which has been struggling with the worst drought the region has witnessed in 60 years, reported the Anatolia news agency.
Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Jacques Diouf, while visiting Turkish Food and Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker on Friday, thanked Turkey on behalf of his organization for the country's resolve to help build a sustainable future for the region.
The ministry, in a statement released Friday, said the FAO official noted that Turkey was one of the leaders in the international community in its massive outreach to Africa. According to Diouf, Turkey ranked seventh in the world's agricultural production list.
Diouf, stating that boosting relations between FAO and Turkey was very important, said he was happy to have Turkey's support in the food crisis that has swept the East African region.
The Regional Programmes for Food Security (RPFS) regional coordination center will be opened in Ankara, Diouf said, adding that Turkey would also host the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) agriculture ministers' meeting in 2012.
Turkey collected a total of TL 510.6 million for Somalia in fundraising efforts that started during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, according to data the Prime Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) released on Thursday evening.
