GALKAYO, Somalia-Interim mayor appointed by Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali has consolidated his hold on the position in closely fought municipal contest in central Galkayo city on Saturday, Garowe Online reports.

Mohamud Yasin Ahmed—already an interim mayor for one week-- secured 24 votes, defeating his closest rival Dek Mohamud Hashi in the third round of voting.

Puntland President, cabinet members and traditional leaders attended the mayoral election held following weeks-long feud among local clans.

Ali last week moved to mollify protesting clans that were infuriated by a dissolution seen as a meddling in traditional distribution of seats within the city council.

Farhan Abdi Gaafaa who promised to co-address prevailing problems with security laxity at the forefront was elected as deputy mayor afterwards.

Public Works and Housing Minister Abdirashid Mohamed Hirsi told Puntland-based independent station, Radio Garowe that Galkayo has today got a permanent administration.

Hirsi also blamed former city councilors for being ineffective in the job. President Ali congratulated the new mayor and his deputy on their election, urging a visible change in security and development areas.

Ahmed is the first interim mayor to be picked among presidential nominees previously assigned to mayorships of Bossaso and Garowe.

Interior and Local Governments Ministry which was sidelined during Galkayo city council selection and vetting process has a mandate to conduct such a municipal exercise.
