Somalia: Al Shabaab fires mortar shells on AMISOM base in El-Baraf

EL BARAF, Somalia- Al Shabaab fighters have fired mortar shells on a military base of Burundian soldiers serving with African Union peacekeeping troops (AMISOM) in El Baraf district in central Somalia, Garowe Online reports.

Residents said several mortars landed inside the AMISOM base, but it was not immediately clear whether anyone had been killed or wounded in the dawn attack.

Through its media, Al Shabaab claimed to have fired 7 mortar rounds at military post for the Burundian troops and inflicted heavy losses on the AU soldiers. El Baraf town located 30 km south of Mahaday district in central Somalia.

 “We attacked the Burundian military base in El Baraf area with mortar shells today. at least seven shells landed inside the station,” Al Shabaab said in a statement posted on its affiliated websites.

The Qaeda linked Al shabaab group was pushed back from large areas in central and southern Somalia in the past years, but still continue to carry out sporadic attacks against security forces and AMISOM troops to topple the weak UN-backed Somali government.
