Somalia: District commissioner critically wounded in car bomb blast

LUUQ, Somalia- The district commissioner of Luuq district in Gedo region Mohamed Hussein Geney has survived an attempt on his life after a bomb fitted into his vehicle exploded in the town, Garowe Online reports.

Eyewitnesses said the commissioner of the border town was seriously wounded in the car bomb and he has been taken to a nearby hospital, where is being operated. One bodyguard was killed in the attack.

“The bomb planted in vehicle has exploded as the district commissioner was on his way to his house, everybody got shocked and ran away from the scene," said the witnesses who spoke to GO over the phone.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, police conducted a security sweep and arrested dozens individuals in connection with the car bomb blast which left the local district commoner wounded. 

So far, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the police said the terror group Al-Shabaab is major suspect. Al-Shabaab has carried out several attacks against district officials in the past.

Wednesday’s assassination bid comes hours after Al Shabab fighters attacked Kenyan military convoy with landmine bombs near the coastal town of Lamu, killing five KDF soldiers.
