A 12-year-old girl raped and murdered in Somalia

GALKAYO, Puntland - A police officer confirmed Monday that a missing 12-year-old girl has been found dead just outside her house in central Somali town, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking to BBC Somali service, Mudug regional police chief, Ahmed Osman said the body of Aisha Ilyes Aden was brutally murdered after being raped, tortured in northern Galkayo city under Puntland state.

"She was kidnapped, and subsequently gang-raped, tortured and brutally killed before being dumped outside her house in the town," said the police officer.

Continuing, Osman added that security forces have nabbed suspects, others are still at large in connection with the minor girl's death and the horrific episode that sparked an immense outrage on social media.

Sources said that the minor girl went missing on Sunday evening after she did not return home from a market in the town, which has been the scene of previous gang rape and clashes between local troops.

The victim's family demanding a thorough probe and death sentence for the culprits. The body of the teen was admitted to hospital in the city for postmortem.

Hundreds of people, mostly women took to the streets Monday to protest the brutal rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, the latest case of violence against women to shock the region.

The angry protesters in Galkayo were calling justice for the girl and urged the Puntland government to work around the clock to bring the rapists to book.
