Somalia: Death toll in Garowe petrol station fire rises to 4

GAROWE, Puntland - The death toll in a huge fire at a petrol station in Garowe, the administrative capital of Somalia's northeastern region of Puntland has risen to four, Garowe Online reports.

A woman and a child were among the dead, according to Garowe mayor. 

Witnesses said plumes of thick smoke billowing from the area could be seen covering a section of the capital as first responders fought their way in to contain the blaze at the eastern side.

The winds spread the fire rapidly through the area, razing large buildings, shops and food stores. Traders reported a huge loss of property to due to the fire which was the worst disaster in Garowe history.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, however, local authorities said an investigation is underway.

Abdisamad Ahmed Jama, the Director General of Garowe hospital said at least eight people sustained wounds in the inferno, including three in critical condition and receiving medical treatment.

One of the wounded has succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Wednesday morning, medics said.

As the city's municipality has no a fire brigade which must respond to such fires, the residents managed to control the fire that sent the whole capital in panic.
