Somalia: Former official arrested for criticizing cronyism in Puntland

GAROWE, Somalia-Garowe Police detained former deputy mayor of Galkayo YaqubMohamed Abdale for lamenting policy of cronyism being practiced atop amid concerns over worsening situation for freedom of expression, Garowe Online reports. 

Abdalle criticized Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali during a press conference in the capital, Garowe on July 5. He alleged that the President failed to deliver on his promises and opted for naked tribalism in the appointment of state officials. 

Abdalle who resigned from his post in May 2015 noted that a ‘professor landed himself in hot water for cronyism’ in apparent reference to former Niagara Economist elected President, Ali.  

Several politicians were previously arrested for their critique of government’s domestic policies. 

On June 24, a day after Puntland Information Minister Mohamud Hassan So’adde threatened journalists with “bullets”, the government closed down independent radio station, Daljir Radio for interviewing former Governor of vast Bari region Abdisamad Mohamed Galan.
