Somalia: Garowe Airport named after first Police Force Commander

GAROWE, Puntland – Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Puntland leader Abdiweli Mohamed Ali “Gaas” have jointly inaugurated the newly expanded Garowe airport on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

The main airport in the state capital has been given to a new name “General Mohamed Abshir International Airport” the first Commander of the Somali Police Force, dropping its original name of Garowe Airport.

Abshir died in the U.S. on 25th October 2017, aged 91. He was one of the founding fathers of Somalia’s northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland, established in 1998.

The inauguration was held in the Airport, with the attendance of President Farmajo, members of Puntland state cabinet, MPs, politicians, traditional elders and delegates from neighboring Djibouti and Ethiopia.

The Turkish firm which is constructing the Airport said the work is still in progress and near completion.
