Somalia: Prominent elder passes away aged 82

GAROWE, Somalia-A prominent clan elder Garad AbshirGarad Salah has passed away at the age of 82 according to his relatives, Garowe Online reports. 

Garad Salah who played a role in state politics from Siyad Barre through Somaliland and Puntland inceptions has succumbed to long ailment in Sweden.  

Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo and traditional leaders expressed their condolences over the passing of late Salah.  

Before being crowned as a titled elder within larger Dhulbahante clan in Sool and Sanaag regions, Garad Salah was a police officer early in his life.  

Moreover, despite wavering local loyalties, he worked with former Puntland Presidents on the future of Sool region whose capital, Lasanod was militarily seized by Somaliland in 2007.
