GAROWE, Somalia Dec 20, 2014 (Garowe Online)-Puntland’s parliamentary sub-committee on Human Rights Saturday called for an end to fighting between two clans in Bari region of northeastern Somalia, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking at a press conference in the state capital of Garowe, members of the committee urged the two brotherly clans to bring the deadly clashes to an end and opt for peaceful coexistence.

They stressed the need for immediate intervention in the conflict by Puntland government and subsequent mediation process.

“The government should broker ceasefire between the warring clan militias and station army on the battlegrounds,” said Parliamentary sub-committee on Human Rights chairman Farah Aideed Asowe.

At least 40 people died in the inter-clan fighting in Rako and Humbays since 2009 when disputes over the ownership of pastureland descended into armed confrontations.

In early December, government-led initiative brought together traditional leaders representing opposing Ali Saleban and Ugar Saleban tribes in Garowe.
