Al-Shabab launches attack on US military base in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Al-Qaeda-linked extremist group, Al-Shabab said it has launched a massive attack on US military base in southern Somalia on Monday, 30 September 2019, Garowe Online reports.

The pro-Al-Shabab media outlets reported that the assault at Balli Doogle Airbase, a former air force training base in Lower Shabelle region with car bombings followed by heavy gun-battle between the militants and American soldiers.

Somali and US military officials did not confirm both the details of the base attack and the death toll. The base lies some 90 kilometers west of Mogadishu. 

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb struck a military convoy carrying Italian soldiers near Jaalle Siyad Military Academy in Mogadishu. No group claimed responsibility for that attack.
