AU military Hands Over Base to Somali Forces in Troop Drawdown

MOGADISHU, Somalia - In a significant move marking the third phase of troop withdrawal, the African Union (AU) Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has handed over the Barire military base to the Somali security forces.

Located in the Lower Shabelle region and under the control of ATMIS's Uganda Peoples' Defense Forces since 2019, the base serves as a strategic buffer zone about 60 km west of Mogadishu.

ATMIS Uganda Contingent Commander Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi emphasized the symbolic significance of the transfer, stating, "This transfer of the Barire military base is not just a transfer of physical assets, but it symbolizes the progress we have made together in our shared mission." He expressed optimism about the future, highlighting the importance of cooperation, mutual respect, and the common goal of achieving lasting peace in Somalia.

Muhudin Ahmed, the Somali National Army (SNA) representative, commended ATMIS Uganda troops for their dedication to the transition process and their sacrifices in the pursuit of peace. He assured that the SNA would continue to secure Barire town and its inhabitants from Al-Shabaab attacks and other illegal armed groups.

This handover follows the withdrawal of 5,000 troops and the transfer of 17 military bases to the Somali Security Forces during the first and second phases of the drawdown in 2023.
