High-Stakes Politics Unfold as Somali President Visits Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 23 (Garowe Online) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, currently on an official visit to Nairobi, has reportedly held closed-door meetings with Kenyan President William Ruto. While Villa Somalia initially framed the visit as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between countries contributing troops to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia (ATMIS), sources close to Garowe Online suggest that political negotiations regarding Jubaland’s leadership were also discussed.

According to insiders, President Hassan pressed President Ruto to exert political pressure on Jubaland’s President Ahmed Madobe, who recently rejected a proposal at the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting. The federal government had pushed for term extensions for some leaders of the Federal Member States, which sparked a political standoff. The dispute reflects broader tensions between Somalia’s federal government and several of its Federal Member States over governance and authority.

Kenyan-Somali lawyer and political commentator Ahmednasir Abdullahi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to accuse President Hassan of failing in his leadership and pursuing personal interests rather than nation-building. “I see Somalia’s President in Nairobi. Apparently, he is lobbying President Ruto to support his fraudulent and illegal scheme of one man, one vote without any backing from the Federal Member States,” wrote Abdullahi.

Abdullahi further alleged that President Hassan was seeking Ruto’s help to pressure Madobe into supporting the controversial electoral proposal, which he described as unfeasible. He pointed to the lack of support from key Federal Member States, including Jubaland and Puntland, as evidence that the president’s plans are unrealistic.

“Instead of building a viable government, President Hassan wasted time digging up graves and selling land to businessmen,” Abdullahi added, accusing the Somali leader of mismanagement and attempting to extend his term in office instead of fostering political stability and fair elections.

While President Mohamud’s visit to Kenya is expected to conclude soon, reports indicate that President Ruto is reluctant to involve himself in Somalia’s internal political affairs. This could potentially hinder the Somali president’s efforts to secure backing for his political agenda, further complicating the lead-up to Somalia’s upcoming elections.
