India reaffirms support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, distances itself from Somaliland recognition moves
NEW DELHI — India on Friday reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity, distancing itself from growing regional moves to recognize Somaliland.
In a press briefing, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi respects Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
“India has longstanding relations with Somalia. We have consistently emphasized the importance of respecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Jaiswal told reporters, responding to questions about the self-declared Somaliland administration.
The remarks come as diplomatic tensions rise in the Horn of Africa following Israel’s decision late last year to recognize Somaliland, a move rejected by Mogadishu and not widely accepted internationally.
Somalia, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, has vowed to take all necessary legal steps to defend its borders and national unity.
India’s position aligns with that of most of the international community and the African Union, which maintains that borders established after independence should not be altered.
