Indian Investors eye Somalia sugar industry

MOGADISHU, Somalia, October 3, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Indian firm has expressed its interest in the revival of sugar industry as Somalia’s banana exports to Middle East markets have made comeback, Garowe Online reports.
Indians said, they are exploring potential investment opportunities in sugar industry in a country racked by twenty years of civil unrest.
Middle Shabelle regional administration officials accompanied Indian business community members on their visit to Jowhar, agriculture-rich town, 90km north of the capital, Mogadishu.
The business delegation from India toured large tracts of agricultural land and former Jowhar Sugar mill in step towards revival of sugar production from scratch to tonnes.
Indian businessmen will analyze the capacity of sugar mill and some would-be hectares for sugarcane plantations, the delegation unveiled.
On September 19, Commerce Minister Mohamed Hassan Adan visited Jowhar alongside Indian engineers and irrigation experts.
Jowhar is rich in agriculture, and was a home to the country’s largest sugar crushing and processing factory before the state collapse in 1991.
