INTERPOL intercepts Somali fugitive in South Sudan

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The international police in coordination with the Somali Police Force have arrested a former cop accused of murder, in one of the most dramatic incidents which have been lauded by various security stakeholders in the Horn of Africa nation which is facing a host of challenges.
Zakariye Ali Ahmed Osobow, a former police officer, was arrested in South Sudan following a joint operation between the Somali Police Force and the International Criminal Police. He has been on the run for months after being accused of committing murder in the country.
According to state media, the plane carrying Osobow touched down at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu on Monday after being extradited to face murder charges at home. Upon his arrival, police said, he was taken into custody and will be arraigned in court to face the charges.
Osobow is accused by the Somali Police Force of the murder of Ali Hassan Siyad, also known as Ali Tareen, a former colleague. The alleged crime occurred in the Dayniile district of Mogadishu, within the Kordama Department not far from the Sabansaban army camp, on July 28, 2022.
At the airport were family members of the slain police officer, representatives of Somali Police, and the Interpol who facilitated the process. A statement is yet to be issued on the future proceedings regarding Osobow's future but he is going to be arraigned in court.
The justice system in Somalia is considered a tedious process given that there is no smooth judiciary system with most trials being done by the Army court. The court martial tries suspected criminals and has won the hearts of thousands of people in the Horn of Africa nation which is struggling with instability.
The government of Somalia is however, trying to set systems running after years of struggle with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud maintaining that he will facilitate the establishment of internal government institutions, which have been deemed as weak and disorganized.
