Left at the Door: Somalia's Govt Scrambles to Restore Trust After Woman Gives Birth Outside Hospital

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s government moved swiftly on Saturday to restore public confidence in maternal healthcare after a woman in active labor was denied entry to Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital, giving birth instead at the hospital’s main entrance.

In response to widespread public outrage, Health and Human Services Minister Dr. Ali Haji Adam dismissed the hospital’s director, Fartun Sharif, the wife of deputy information minister Abdirahman Al-Adala. He appointed Abdirisak Sharif Ali as the new head.

The ministry described the incident, captured in widely circulated video footage, as a “grave breach of duty and human dignity” and launched an urgent investigation.

Urging the new director to prioritize accountability, integrity, and compassionate care, Dr. Adam emphasized that Somali mothers and children deserve timely, high-quality, and humane medical services.
