MOGADISHU, Somalia - Police in Galkayo town in central Somalia arrested Aweys Osman Abdi who is accused of killing 4 family members and wounded five others at IDP camp near the capital, Mogadishu on July 9.

The suspected killer tried to escape justice after carrying out the mass shooting at Tabeelaha Sheikh Ibrahim, where hundreds of locally displaced people are living since they fled from their homes due to drought and conflict in 2011.

His arrest came followed collaboration between Somali police and Galmudug security forces, according to Gen Qasim Sheikh Doon, the commander of Mudug regional police commander.

It remains yet unclear who the man has targeted and executed the 4 people from the same family, but sources said the shooting came after an argument over mysterious circumstances.

“Abdi killed his wife first then attacked the family during her burial the next night. He disguised as woman, wearing Hijab while armed with an AK-47 assault rifle,” said the police spokesman.

An investigation was launched in the murder and both police in Mogadishu and those in the central town shared information and pictures of the suspect that subsequently led to the arrest.

The perpetrator is expected to be arraigned in the Mogadishu court to face the murder charges.

The Federal Government of Somalia faces accusations of failing to protect the civilians from attacks by the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab and restore peace and stability in the country.

The long-chaotic Horn of Africa country witnessed lethal attacks, incusing truck bombing at K-5 junction that killed nearly 1,000 people since Farmajo assumed office in February 2017 as president.
