MOGADISHU, Somalia, January 12, 2016 (Garowe Online)-US President Barack Obama has named Stephen Schwartz as new Ambassador to Somalia, seven months after career diplomat Katherine Dhanani withdrew for personal reasons, Garowe Online reports.

White House on Tuesday said, Schwartz will be taking over as first US envoy to the East African country in more than 24 years.

In March, 2015, Dhanani told the Senate that Somalis have proven pessimists wrong.

The Department of State announced commencement of diplomatic operations in Somalia with the nomination of Charge d’Affaires within Nairobi embassy in September.

On May 5, the US secretary of State John Kerr paid a rare visit to Mogadishu where he met Somali political leaders.
