MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) killed senior Al-Shabaab militants in Bay and Bakool regions in an operation that targeted the group’s strategic assets, which have significantly assisted the group in instilling terror and mass deaths across the country.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the forces killed Mohamed Abdi Mohamed Nur (Goofoow) in planned operations in Bakool and Bay regions.
MoD reaffirms its commitment to eliminate all terrorist remnants and secure lasting peace across Somalia.

Goofoow, officials said, was the group’s Amir in Abal base, which the group has frequently used to wage deadly attacks in the Horn of Africa nation. He is accused of masterminding the deaths of several civilians, besides disrupting peace in the region.

"The terrorist was serving as an Amir of the Abal base unit and was the mastermind of attacks that targeted civilians within that region. The forces seized weapons and documents detailing plans to disrupt security," read the statement.

A similar operation was carried out at Wara Mintaaniya village in the Bay region, which also led to the death of two senior al-Shabaab operatives in the country. The two were identified as Abu Khalid and Sharif Amir, according to security teams.

"At Wara Mintaaniya village within Bay region, the forces killed two Al-Shabaab operatives identified as Yahye Abu Khalid, a key organiser of terrorist attacks, and Sharif Amir, who later succumbed to severe injuries," the ministry stated.

Al-Shabaab has been under immense pressure to bow out following coordinated government operations on various frontlines, powered by aerial and ground combats from the US Africa Command and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, respectively.
