Somalia Deploys Fresh Forces to Tighten Grip on Mogadishu After al-Shabab Attacks

MOGADISHU, Oct 23, 2025  — Somalia’s federal government has deployed newly trained security forces along main roads leading into the capital, Mogadishu, in a fresh push to tighten security and prevent attacks by the al Qaeda-linked group al Shabaab.

Witnesses said the troops, equipped with armoured vehicles and heavy weapons, were seen on the outskirts of the city late on Wednesday, conducting searches and security operations aimed at detecting suspicious movements.

In a statement, the federal government said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to stabilise Mogadishu and secure key areas identified as potential targets for militant activity.

Security officials said the forces were stationed at strategic entry points to deter any groups attempting to threaten the capital’s stability.

The move follows earlier operations by the elite Haramcad (Cheetah) police unit across several districts of Banadir region, which authorities said had reduced criminal and militant incidents in the city.

Earlier this month, al Shabaab fighters attacked the Godka Jilicow detention facility, a National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) compound that holds members of al Shabaab and Islamic State. Several intelligence officers were killed in the assault, which was carried out by attackers wearing NISA uniforms and driving a vehicle marked with the agency’s insignia.
