NEW YORK — Somalia has secured a seat on the U.N. Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term, rounding out the council's 10 rotating seats with the permanent members: U.S., U.K., France, China, and Russia.

Somalia's U.N. Ambassador, Abuukar Baalle, stated Somalia's dedication to the U.N. Charter and to promoting peace and security worldwide.

This election marks a significant step for Somalia, giving it a louder voice in international discussions on peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, and resolving conflicts. The country now has the chance to influence global policy and responses to crises.

With Somalia on the council, Africa gains stronger representation in global affairs, as the continent has designated seats. Somalia will focus on regional issues, particularly in the unstable Horn of Africa.

The nation's new role on the Security Council elevates its diplomatic presence and emphasizes its commitment to counterterrorism and regional peace. Also, President Hassan Sheikh announced that Somalia has cleared its financial obligations to the UN for the past 34 years.

The membership also opens doors for Somalia to gain additional international backing for its security challenges. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hailed this development as a "new chapter in global leadership and peacebuilding" in a speech broadcast on television.

The president who congratulated the people on this milestone committed Somalia to upholding the U.N. Charter and international laws, representing the interests of the African Union and the Arab League while advocating for justice.
