Somalia: Flydubai Suspends Flights to Mogadishu Amid Security Concerns

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Flydubai Airlines announced on Friday that it will be suspending its operations to and from Mogadishu, Somalia, effective June 11, 2024, citing operational reasons.

In a message sent to its partners, the airline stated that its last flight to and from Mogadishu would be operated on June 10, 2024. The airline did not provide further details on the reasons for the suspension of its operations.

However, reports suggest that the suspension is due to security concerns. This is not the first time Flydubai has taken such a step. In April, a similar situation unfolded when several airlines, including Flydubai, halted their flights to Mogadishu in response to a security alert from the US Embassy.

Flydubai, based in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, began its direct flights to Mogadishu on March 9, 2023, marking the first direct flight between Somalia and the UAE.

The suspension of Flydubai's operations to and from Mogadishu comes as a blow to the city's efforts to attract more international airlines and boost its economy. The government of Somalia has been working to improve the country's infrastructure and security to attract more foreign investment and tourism.

The suspension of Flydubai's operations to and from Mogadishu is expected to have a significant impact on the city's economy and could lead to a decrease in tourism and business travel to the city.
