BAIDOA, Somalia — Heavy fighting broke out Monday on the outskirts of Baidoa between Southwest State security forces and Federal Government of Somalia troops supported by armed militias, officials and witnesses said, marking a sharp escalation in the region’s ongoing political crisis.

The clashes, which involved both light and heavy weaponry, erupted in the peri-urban areas surrounding the city. Southwest State media reported that its regional forces successfully repelled an attempt by the "armed groups" to enter the city, identifying the attackers as elements linked to political opposition groups currently challenging the regional administration.

Security officials in Baidoa confirmed that several prisoners were captured during the engagement. While official casualty figures have not yet been released, local sources indicated that the fighting resulted in multiple deaths and injuries on both sides.

By Monday noon, regional forces were reportedly conducting "mopping-up" operations in rural areas to pursue the retreating pro-government militias.

Inside Baidoa, the administrative capital of the Southwest State, the atmosphere remained tense. Security has been significantly bolstered, with additional checkpoints established and troops patrolling key government installations.

The outbreak of violence comes as relations between the Federal Government in Mogadishu and the Southwest State administration reach a breaking point. The two sides are currently deadlocked over a contentious election cycle and broader disputes regarding regional security control.

The Federal Government of Somalia has not yet issued an official statement regarding today’s clashes or the allegations that its troops were involved in the offensive.
