Somalia: Hundreds protest against 4.5 quota in Puntland

GAROWE, Somalia, December 19, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Hundreds of residents in Puntland capital of Garowe Friday protested against return to 4.5 power sharing formula in 2016 elections, a day after Somali political leaders crafted a murky understanding on model for electoral transition, Garowe Online reports.
The participants at anti-4.5 rally were shouting slogans in protest at any possible option for the traditional quota.
Somali leaders late on Wednesday scrapped the controversial system for a mixture of clan and districts-something hailed as a stepping stone for democratic transition in 2020.
Protesters called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and outgoing United Nations envoy to Somalia Ambassador Nicholas Kay to respect what the public will favors.
Somali leaders are scheduled to meet over detailed framework on the new election model in the southern port city of Kismayo on January 10.
Puntland and Jubaland preferred election on the basis of constituencies to the controversial method in the course of nation-wide consultations last month.
