BAIDOA, Somalia Nov 20, 2014 (Garowe Online) –Hundreds of residents in Bay regional capital of Baidoa took to the streets in support of the newly elected President of Southwest state on Thursday, Garowe Online reports.

The banner-waving crowds  poured under tight security into the streets, chanting slogans in favor of Southwest State leader and former Parliament Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan.

Bay regional administration officials and traditional leaders later addressed participants at Pro-Sharif Hassan rally at a football stadium in the downtown, and expressed delight with how transparent the election was on Monday.

Federal Government of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Wednesday congratulated Adan on his election to southwest state presidency.

Similar statements have been made by international community members including United Nations envoy, US special representative and British ambassador, calling Baidoa election an incremental step towards state building process.
