Somalia: Jubaland, AU forces kill over a dozen militants, terror officials captured

GARBAHAREY, Somalia, August 26, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Jubaland forces along with African Union peacekeepers have killed over a dozen militants in a fierce battle in Gedo region of southwestern Somalia on Tuesday, an official told Radio Garowe.

A spokesman for Jubaland forces, Nur Sayah Hared said, the allied forces killed 21 militants in heavy clashes in Tulo Barwaqo area, 18 km off Gedo regional capital of Garbaharey.

Hared admitted that they lost five soldiers, Dolow police station commander and the Deputy District Commissioner of Beled Hawo.

Medics at Garbaharey General Hospital confirmed that seven wounded soldiers have been admitted for medical treatment.

Three Al Shabaab officials and a truck loaded with ammunitions were also seized, Jubaland forces spokesman added.

The battle marks the deadliest in months as Somali government forces aided by African Union troops are pressing ahead with clean-up operations in central and southern Somalia.

Areas where the heavy battle occurred remain calm according to residents and military sources.
