Somalia: Jubaland President rewards soldiers in Al-Shabaab defeat battle

KISMAYO, Somalia - Ahmed Madobe, the president of the regional state of Jubaland, has rewarded local troops behind the defeat of Al-Shabaab in three critical frontlines, in what was defined as the most 'successful' outing by local forces.

Madobe honored the soldiers with medals besides promoting them to senior ranks for bravery during Monday's operations against the Al-Shabaab group. The battle left over 130 Al-Shabaab fighters dead.

Among those awarded include Major General Abdi Kafi Dayib Ahmed, Commander of the Birjeh Brigade of the Jubaland Darwish Army, Major General Bashir Guhad Hassan, Commander of the Birjeh Brigade, and Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Abdi Shafeeh.

The local leader also promoted all the Birjeh Brigade of the Jubaland Dervish Army to the next ranks in honour of their role in defeating the militants. Furthermore, Madobe hailed those who were injured and those who died in the battle.

On Tuesday this week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also commended the joint Jubaland and Somali Nationa Army for their bravery and victory against Al-Shabaab.

In a series of coordinated operations conducted west and south of Kismayo, Lower Juba region, the Somali National Army (SNA), in collaboration with Jubaland Dervishes, successfully neutralized a significant number of Al-Shabaab militants.

Acting on credible intelligence, our brave forces launched three separate attacks, demonstrating unwavering resolve in the fight against terrorism. The operation targeted Harbole, Mido, and Bulo-Haji where 135 militants were killed.

The forces are in hot pursuit of the remaining terrorist escapees who will ultimately meet their fate. These successful operations dealt a major blow to Al-Shabaab’s capabilities in the region and a cache of weapons was seized in the process.
