Somalia lifts ban on Kenya miraa cargo flights

MOGADISHU, Somalia-Miraa cargo flights coming from neighboring Kenya will resume following bilateral talks between Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Somali counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.
Accompanied by embargo-devastated Meru Governor Peter munya, Kenyatta is on visit to Mogadishu for extraordinary IGAD summit being hosted by Somalia for the first time in 30 years.
The two leaders agreed on the resumption of miraa trade in the margins of the summit, said Somali officials.
The loss of the Somalia market after several European countries launched a scathing battle against the narcotic leaf hit Kenyan farmers hard.
Early assessment from the two-week halt to miraa khat flights into Somalia shows, the ban is costing Kenya enormously in the miraa industry.
Amidst ban, regional administrations defied federal government directive, allowing planes carrying Khat to offload on daily basis.
