Somalia: MPs want Hiran-Middle Shabelle convention postponed

MOGADISHU, Somalia-Some 42 lawmakers in Somalia’s Federal Parliament have tabled a motion suggesting for ongoing state formation convention in Jowhar to be postponed to proper date on Saturday, Garowe Online reports.
On April 13, the conference resumed in cautious atmosphere in Middle Shabelle regional capital of Jowhar, with Somali Interior Minister Abdirahman Odawa present.
The proposal was slated for another day after it failed to garner the required quorum in parliament.
Jowhar news site reported that MPs hailing from Hiran—who support reconciliation meetings in Beledweyne—were part of motion proponents.
The second phase of controversial convention has got underway in Jowhar. Hiran clan elders previously expressed their reservations about the inter-regional gathering; with Somalia government officials blamed for hijacking agendas.
On Tuesday, Somali political leaders ruled out the possibility of term extension at the end of leadership forum in Mogadishu.
