Somalia: Nomads die from thirst in Gedo

GARBAHAAREY, Somalia Oct 22, 2014 (Garowe Online)- As Somalia is reeling from the aftermath of famine, at least eight people, almost all nomads, have died of thirst and hunger near Geriley area in Gedo region of southwestern Somalia, Garowe Online reports.
The pastoralists succumbed to severe thirst while wadding through semi-arid tracts in search for pasture and water, residents said.
Aar Mohamud, a local clan elder in Geriley told the media that 28 others were also rescued alive.
Hunger and thirst claimed at killed nearly 30 people, mainly nomads in Gedo region alone over the last few months.
In September, 18 people including children and aging persons died of dehydration near Gedo regional district of Luuq.
The worst drought in years has affected tens of thousands in south-central regions, with aid agencies striving to intensify outreach for humanitarian assistance.
