Somalia: Parliamentary elections for Banadir region, Somaliland to kick start in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia- Federal Indirect Electoral Implementation team (FIEIT) has announced that the parliamentary elections for clans hailing from Banadir region and Somaliland are scheduled to begin today in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, Garowe Online reports.

A total of 7 members of the Lower House chamber will be elected for Banadir region, whereas 11 senators and 46 MPs will be elected for Somaliland region for the upcoming Upper and Lower Houses respectively.

3 seats are expected to be voted for Banadir region in the ballot session that will be held in the capital today.

Native Somaliland clans in Mogadishu released the seats composition and candidates competing for the Upper House election. Waqooyi Galbeed region, Togdheer and Awdal each received 3 seats in the Upper House chamber, whereas 2 seats were allocated for Sanag region.

However, Banadir Administration spokesman, Abdifatah Omar Halane told media, that meetings held at the administration headquarter yesterday to ensure the security arrangements are in place for the upcoming parliamentary elections set to take place in Mogadishu.

Somaliland has earlier announced it boycotted the Somali electoral process and stated that clans hailing from their region in Mogadishu are not representative of Somaliland government.
