​Somalia: President declares state of war, makes major security shake-up

MOGADISHU, Somalia- The President of the Somali Federal Government Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has declared the country in a state of war on Thursday, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking to media while wearing a military uniform at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, President Farmajo publicly announced war on Al Shabaab group and issued new 60-day amnesty for the militants to surrender to the government.

"Today, I announce war on terrorist groups. I am calling on all Somalis to collaborate with the armed forces and the security agencies to stabilize the country," said Somali President at the press conference.

The President instructed the army to prepare for offensive against Al Shabaab, to improve the security situation of the country following series of bombings in the capital since his election in February 8.

Additionally, Farmajo has made a major shakeup of the military, Police and intelligence agency during cabinet meeting, that saw former intelligence chief Mohamed Ali Sanbaloshe reappointed as the new head of NISA. 

The President also appointed new Police and Army chiefs, General Abdihakim Dahir "Saaid" and General Mohamed Ahmed Jimale respectively. 

President Farmajo has sent condolences to the grieving family and public who lost their loved ones in Wednesday's car bomb attack at a cafe near the headquarters of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Mogadishu.
