Somalia President Urged to Resign Over Security, Foreign Policy Failures

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A group of lawmakers from the Puntland state demanded the resignation of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday, branding his administration “a disgrace” and citing its failures in national security and foreign policy.

The sharp rebuke from the legislators highlighted growing frustration with the federal government’s inability to curb the escalating threat of Al-Shabaab militants, who have intensified attacks across the country in recent months. The lawmakers accused Mohamud’s administration of lacking an effective strategy to combat the extremist group, which continues to undermine stability in the Horn of Africa nation.

“The government’s inability to secure the nation, its weak foreign policy, and the failure to decisively combat Al-Shabaab have led to a deepening crisis,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement.

The criticism extended beyond security concerns, with the group slamming the administration’s foreign policy as “directionless” and ineffective. The statement follows recent diplomatic tensions between Somalia and neighboring countries, including disputes over trade and regional influence, which have further strained Mogadishu’s international standing.

The call for Mohamud’s resignation marks a rare public challenge from Puntland lawmakers, reflecting broader political divisions within Somalia. Puntland, which operates its own government, has frequently clashed with the federal administration over governance and resource-sharing issues.

Somalia has faced persistent instability, with ongoing security threats from Al-Shabaab compounded by economic challenges and political infighting. Mohamud, who returned to power in 2022 for his second term as president, has pledged to prioritize the fight against the militants and strengthen national unity.

No official statement has been released by the Somali government in response to the lawmakers’ demands. However, sources close to the presidency, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Mohamud remains committed to his agenda and has no intention of stepping down.

The MPs' accusation comes amid escalating tensions between Puntland and the federal government that could further complicate efforts to address Somalia’s myriad challenges as the country grapples with a fragile security situation.
