Somalia's humanitarian crisis worsen as people die for hunger

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Thousands of vulnerable people in Somalia face hunger after rains failed for the third time. Already several people have died from hunger in Jubaland and Galmudug, according to local authorities in the country.

Last week, authorities in Galmadug said at least six people died from hunger, adding that the situation could worsen in the coming months. Some sections of the country are receiving some rain. Gedo and Lower Juba regions under Jubaland are the most affected locations.

To mitigate the crisis, top government officials led by PM Roble have forfeited their salaries which will be used to buy food for the families according to Villa Somalia. But, no aid from Mogadishu didn't reach the drought-hit areas so far.

The United Nations has urged Somalia partners to chip in and help the vulnerable people from dying. A fortnight ago, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble declared hunger and emergency, adding that most people risk death.

But despite the drought in other areas, some regions are currently receiving rains, coupled with floods. Somalia mostly depends on international aid to run most of the errands, including but not limited to operations of the federal government.
