Somalia's Puntland Announces Readiness for Offensive Against Extremist Groups

GAROWE, Somalia - The Puntland State of Somalia has finalized preparations for a significant military operation targeting extremist groups, according to regional President Said Abdullahi Deni.

In a press conference, Deni urged the public to support what he described as an essential campaign to protect peace and security in Puntland.

The offensive, though undated, is aimed at both al-Shabaab and the Islamic State, which have been active within Puntland's territory. Deni's call for public support comes amid heightened security concerns, with the region's forces reportedly on high alert.

To reduce the ranks of the insurgent groups, Deni has extended an offer of amnesty to members willing to renounce violence and their affiliations with al-Shabaab or the Islamic State. "Our doors are open for those who choose peace over conflict," Deni stated, emphasizing the region's commitment to reconciliation as well as security operations.

The strategic Bari region, including the Cal-Miskaad mountains, has been a focal point for extremist activities, with both groups exploiting the rugged terrain for hideouts and launching attacks. The planned offensive marks a continuation of Puntland's efforts to curb the influence of these groups, which have historically leveraged local grievances and political instability to expand their operations.

This military readiness announcement follows a period of heightened tension and sporadic clashes within Puntland, reflecting the ongoing struggle for control over territories and resources. The operation's success could potentially alter the security dynamics in northeastern Somalia, impacting not only local governance but also the broader fight against extremism in the Horn of Africa.

As Puntland gears up for this offensive, the international community watches closely, understanding that stability in this part of Somalia could have significant implications for regional security, particularly regarding maritime safety in the Gulf of Aden.
