Somalia: Sheikh Sharif Slams Government Allegations Against Opposition as Baseless
Mogadishu (GO) - Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has strongly rejected recent accusations from the federal government claiming that opposition figures support the militant group Al-Shabaab. Speaking at a major conference held in Mogadishu on Wednesday, Sheikh Sharif dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, describing them as an attempt to silence dissent and suppress the voice of the people.
“These accusations are not grounded in reality,” Sheikh Sharif said. “They are a deliberate effort to intimidate the opposition and derail efforts toward dialogue and national reconciliation.”
The former president accused the government of failing to address corruption within the security sector, particularly in the military. He argued that corruption has weakened the ability of security forces to effectively combat Al-Shabaab and poses a significant threat to national progress and stability.
He called for the creation of an open and inclusive political environment where all stakeholders can engage in dialogue to find lasting solutions to Somalia’s political crisis and ongoing conflict.
“Dialogue is the only key to saving this country,” Sheikh Sharif stressed. “I urge all sides to recognize the importance of negotiation and work towards peace and unity.”
Sheikh Sharif also emphasized that the Somali people need honest and transparent leadership that can deliver development, justice, and political stability.
The conference also addressed the broader national situation, including discussions on forming a united opposition front against the unilateral electoral plans being pursued by President Hassan Sheikh. The political tension in Somalia continues to escalate, with less than a year remaining in President Hassan’s term.
