Somalia: Somaliland's Senatorial election in Mogadishu postponed

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somaliland's State Indirect Elections Team commonly called [SIET] has postponed speeches for Senatorial candidates for the region, just days after scheduling the polls for September 27th until September 30th this year.
According to a statement issued Sunday, the commission said they would communicate the candidates over the date when candidates would address the delegates over their manifestos.
“We would like to inform all candidates who have registered for the Upper House elections in Somaliland that there will be a delay in tomorrow’s speeches,” the commission said in a statement.
On Saturday, the commission released the timetable of Somaliland senate elections mid this month after the differences between the Senate speaker Abdi Hashi and Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid was ironed out.
Already, the electoral Commission commenced the registration and certification of the candidates last. The candidates, including four women, will be battling it out in the 11 seats representing Somaliland.
Sources said the delay came after Farmaajo held a special meeting with respected traditional elders from Somaliland at his office in Villa Somalia last night. It's not clear the agenda of the meeting.
The Senate has 54 Senators, Puntland and Somaliland have 11 seats each, Hirshabelle, Galmudung, Jubbaland, and South West have eight seats each. 32 representatives have been elected, while 22 seats remain vacant.
Somalia is also set to kickstart Lower House elections, which will then be followed by presidential polls later on in December. Outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has expressed in defending his seat.
The postponement of Senatorial polls for Somaliland comes days after Senate Speaker Abdi Hashi and Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Gulaid made a consensus. The two have been battling to control elections in the region.
