Somalia, Sudan agree to boost ties

KHARTOUM, Sudan-Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Sudanese counterpart Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir have agreed to step up cooperation in various fields during a State visit by the former to Khartoum, Garowe Online reports. 

Bilateral meeting between delegations of Somalia and Sudan has focused on strengthening partnership in economy, trade, security, culture, education and governance. 

The two countries have also agreed to form a strategic cooperation council at ministerial level in a new sign for growing ties.  

After a pact was signed between the two countries in the above areas, Mohamud expressed his appreciation for the continued support Sudan has given to Somalia over the course of civil war and at the present time, calling for deepened Sudanese assistance.  

He also noted that Somalia is preparing for national elections expected to be held this year, something he said that shows the huge progress made by Somalia. 

Sudanese President has pledged more support for Somalia, and assured his Somali counterpart of his country’s commitment to Somalia’s peace process. 

Al Bashir hoped that Somalia will be in charge of its security in the near future for the East African country to stand on its feet again. 

Sudan has in the past offered hundreds of scholarship grants to Somali students.
