Somalia’s president to leave for New York to attend UN gathering

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo will leave for New York on Sunday to attend the UN General Assembly, Garowe Online reports.

Villa Somalia said in a statement that Farmajo will hold meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) which will open on 24the September 2019.

Since taking office in early 2017, President Farmajo has not attended the UN General Assembly for the past two years because of his US citizenship of which he renounced last month.

The previous two years [2017 and 2018], Somalia was represented in the annual 72nd and 73rd United Nations General Assembly by Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Khaire and Foreign Minister, Ahmed Isse Awad.

His trip to the United States comes as the Horn of Africa nation faces political crisis pitting the central government and some regional states amid an increase in new attacks and assassinations across the capital.

On Saturday, September 2019, at least one person was killed and two others wounded in a car bomb explosion in Mogadishu’s Dharkenley district, according to a witness, who spoke to Garowe Online via phone.

More than 100 heads of state and government are expected to attend the UNGA74.
