MINNEAPOLIS, Nov 22 – U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar strongly reacted on Friday to President Donald Trump’s announcement to end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program that has shielded Somali immigrants in Minnesota from deportation.

Omar, a Somali-American Democrat representing Minnesota, told reporters: “Most of us Somali Americans are citizens; the policy change will not affect us.”

Trump’s decision, announced via Twitter, ends a program that has been critical in protecting the Somali community from deportation, citing that Somalia remains unstable.

The move has sparked widespread debate and concern, particularly in Minnesota, home to the largest Somali population in the United States, and comes amid broader discussions over U.S. immigration policies and protections for refugees.

TPS allows nationals from countries experiencing conflict or disaster to remain temporarily in the United States. The program’s termination could affect hundreds of Somali immigrants who have relied on it for safety and stability.
