UK Ambassador Says Britain Rejects Somaliland Recognition, Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Unity

NEW YORK (GO) — The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United Nations told the UN Security Council that Britain firmly supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

Addressing the Security Council, the UK ambassador said London’s long-standing position remains unchanged, stressing that any change to Somaliland’s status can only come through dialogue and mutual agreement between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, and must comply with the UN Charter.

The ambassador said the UK regrets any actions that undermine peace and security in the region, warning that political divisions risk benefiting Al-Shabaab and other illegal armed groups.

He urged both Somalia and Somaliland to intensify dialogue efforts, with support from regional bodies, to resolve their differences and work together against shared security threats.

On security assistance, the UK ambassador said Britain continues to strongly support international efforts to stabilize Somalia. Within the current year, the UK has provided $30 million toward Somalia’s security stabilization and an additional $22 million to support the AUSOM mission.

The ambassador also noted that the UK supported the recent local government elections in Mogadishu, describing them as part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and democratic institutions in Somalia.

While Somaliland authorities have long viewed the UK as a key diplomatic partner, the statement underscored that Britain’s position remains rooted in Somalia’s unity and a negotiated solution through dialogue.
