NAIROBI - The Special Operations Group (SOG), the multi-agency security team tasked with high-profile operations, failed a potential major Alshabaab attack within Garissa County, in the latest outing, which firmly protects the country from terror groups.

According to reports, the elite Special Operations Group stopped eight Alshabaab terrorists who were attempting to set up Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at the Welmerer-Yumbia area in Garissa.

The SOG swiftly responded to information reported by the local community that 8 terrorists had been spotted attempting to set up IEDs, officials said, adding that the militants were effectively repulsed following the local intelligence.

The Brave officers engaged the terrorists and managed to recover assembled IEDs1, which were to be used to attack our mothers, children, and security officers using the Welmerer-Yumbis road.

"The SOG appreciates the cooperation of the local community and other stakeholders and urges enhanced vigilance to stop any terror plots, security teams said in a statement.

The Kenya Defence Forces have been leading operations both in and outside Kenya, with more troops deployed along the Kenya-Somalia border. The KDF is also actively fighting alongside local troops in Somalia, managing to secure Jubaland from the militants.

Al-Shabaab has been waging sporadic attacks within Kenya, especially in the Northeastern region. Still, such attacks have significantly reduced in the last four years thanks to the cooperation between locals and security teams deployed in the area.
