Ugandan army kills 11 ADF rebels, part of those who killed foreign tourists recently

KAMPALA - Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) force has said that it has killed 11 Allied Defense Force ( ADF) rebels suspected to be part of the group that recently killed 2 foreign tourists in Queen Elizabeth National Game Park.

The deputy army spokesman, Colonel Deo Akiki told the media in Uganda's capital Kampala a senior commander of the rebels called Njovu was captured with injuries. He said the rebels were killed in the Night targeted -intelligence-led operation

Akiki said, "A combined force of Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) special forces that included Special Force Command and Marine forces carried out a targeted night operation and killed 11 ADF rebels that attacked tourists in Kasese district .".

He said that the group was attacked on Tuesday night, 31st October, 2023 near Kayanja Landing Site off Lake Edward in Kasese District adding that the operation is still ongoing. The point of attack is near the Uganda-Congo border, about 360 Kilometers from Uganda’s Capital City, Kampala.

The UPDF launched the manhunt on October 17 after the attack on the two tourists and their driver/guide.

“An intelligence-led operation saw a number of them perish under the combined fire of UPDF marines, Special Forces, 222, 301 Brigade Infantry squads in a well-coordinated night operation,” Akiiki added.

ADF rebels originated in Uganda in the 1990s with the intention of overthrowing the government led by incumbent president Yoweri Museveni but were overpowered by government troops and they fled to DR Congo forests from where they launched attacks on civilians in both Uganda and DR Congo.
