GALKAYO, Somalia-Armed assailants shot and killed Galkayo district councilor outside his home in Garsoor neighborhood shortly after dusk prayers on Sunday, Garowe Online reports.

The killing of late Saed Hayle is the latest in a series of targeted assassinations likely carried out by beleaguered Al Shabaab group.

Deputy Galkayo Mayor Mohamed Ahmed Abshir confirmed the death of the councilor to Puntland-based independent station, Radiio Garowe. Abshir paid a tribute to the late official who he said will be remembered for his honesty and talent.

Hayle marks the third Puntland official to be killed in restive Galkayo during the holy month of Ramadan.

Unknown gunmen previously murdered woman peace activist Dhudi Yusuf Adan and planning ministry regional coordinator. On May 7, pistol-wielding middle-aged man shot dead the General Manager of Telecommunications Company, Somtel.

Over a few days ago, residents in vast north protested, calling on local authorities to either provide better security or resign.
