BOSASO, Puntland- Unknown gunmen were reported have attacked Village Hotel in Bosaso, the commercial city of Puntland state on Wednesday morning, which resulted in casualties, Garowe Online reports.

Reports said 7 assailants have attempted to storm the Hotel and engaged in fierce fighting with the guards that led to the death of 6 people from both sides and 2 others were seriously wounded.

Witnesses told GO that 2 gunmen were killed in the clash but they managed to kill 4 guards in the fighting.

Government officials and foreign nationals are frequent dwellers in the Hotel, however, sources said that officials from Dubai Port World (DP) were present in the hotel at the time but fortunately they weren't  injured from the clash.

The incident is the latest in series of attacks against goverment officials, security forces and civilian targets in Bosaso city. Al Shabaab and ISIS militants have increased their ambush attacks in Puntlan region since the end of last year.

This comes amid failure of Puntland government to enforce security in the region amidst proliferation of militant groups in Bari region.

Puntland President Abdiwali Mohamed Ali "Gaas" was blamed for abandoning his responsibilities toward his constituents, and engaging in the presidential campaign in Mogadishu while the region is witnessing the worse drought conditions and insecurity.

Puntland, located northeastern of Somalia has been relatively stable compared to the rest of the country, but frequent attacks by the terrorist groups are posing serious risks to the stability of the region
