Somalia: No Ethiopian nationals were killed in Puntland, police say

GAROWE, Somalia - Police in Somalia’s federal state of Puntland has dismissed claims that Ethiopian nationals have been killed in the ongoing crackdown against ISIS militants in Puntland, terming the reports as 'deeply flawed and inaccurate'.

In a statement, Puntland Police Force maintained that the reports were false, but acknowledged a minor incident where individuals threw stones at immigrants, which was quickly addressed adding that those involved are now in custody.

"No Ethiopians have been killed in Puntland. Reports are false. A minor incident involving people throwing stones at immigrants was handled, and those responsible are in custody. We warn against such acts and remain committed to protecting all residents," read the statement.

The Puntland forces have dedicated the last month to the eradication of the ISIS militants in eastern parts of the state, targeting Bari region which was considered the bedrock of the militants. Several villages have since been liberated with several foreign fighters either killed or captured.

With no support from the Somali government, Puntland is battling against ISIS militants and their Al-Shabaab counterparts with the ultimate goal being liberating the state from violent extremists. The operation has since been declared 'successful' as more militants surrendered to authorities.
