GAROWE, Somalia-Puntland Vice President Abdihakin Abdullahi Haji Omar is gathering top security officials in wake of Al Shabaab's seizure of Garacad coastal town, Garowe Online reports.

The meeting has got underway at the State House as government seeks measures to confront militants.

On Monday afternoon, militants in boats disembarked in the Indian Ocean town of Garacad in a surprise thrust.

Puntland Mudug Governor Hassan Khalif Mohamed has confirmed the fall of Garacad during an interview with Puntland-based independent station, Radio Garowe.

Residents sighted foreigners, who said, they will stay in the coastal town for six days.

Telecommunication lines have been severed by Al Shabaab shortly after the seaborne attack.

The move is seen a terror escalation as militants continue to lose grounds against allied forces in central and southern Somalia.

GAROWE ONLINE will be keeping you updated on Garacad in hours.
